Competency restoration research is being reoriented from the competent/incompetent distinction toward predicting which incompetent defendants are difficult to restore, a reorientation driven by inpatient waitlists rather than by any change in the legal standard — but this is a narrative synthesis of that literature, not a new finding that alters a restorability opinion.
