NATIONWIDE CHANGES IN LEGAL STATUS AFTER MANDATORY RENEWAL OF MEDICAL-PROTECTION HOSPITALIZATION IN JAPAN.
— STAFF
Japan's mandatory renewal requirement for involuntary psychiatric hospitalization was followed in its first year by a large drop in the involuntary category and an almost matching rise in voluntary admissions, which the authors read as "a redistribution of legal admission status among continuing inpatients rather than a comparable reduction in psychiatric hospitalization itself" (Int J Law Psychiatry. 2026;110:102283) — a caution for anyone reading falling involuntary-admission counts as evidence that a procedural safeguard reduced coercion.
